Components of the Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS) undergoing testing on a vibration table at the Engineering Evaluation Laboratory (EEL) at NASA. The blue cables are sensors that monitor the forces experienced by the instrument during the test. When NASAs new Moon rover, VIPER, lands on the lunar surface to begin its hunt for water ice at the poles, it will be equipped for the job with instruments that have already been tested in this harsh environment. The NSS will measure the amount of hydrogen-bearing materials near the surface at the landing site to determine the potential for water ice.
