Illustration of the Russian-born physicist Andre Geim (born 1958). Geim is best known for the discovery of graphene, a material composed of a single layer of carbon atoms with many potential technology applications. He was awarded a share of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery along with his colleague Konstantin Novoselov. Geim also received an Ig Nobel Prize in 2000 for the first magnetic levitation of a live animal, a frog. He is the first scientist to be awarded both a Nobel and Ig Nobel.
