Monument In St. Chads Church, Shrewsbury, to the officers and men of the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment who fell during the Indian Mutiny, 1864. A monument has just been erected in the vestibule of St. Chads Church,...at the expense of Lieutenant-General Sutherland, C.B., and other officers of the 53rd Regiment, in memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates of the regiment who fell in action or died from the effects of their wounds and exposure in the performance of their duty during the Indian mutiny in 1857, 1858, and 1859. The funeral urn stands on a simple pedestal, with military sashes thrown over it, with the regimental badge above, and the Queens colours and those of the 53rd on each side. On the right stands an officer leaning, in a mournful attitude, upon one arm, which rests on the tablet recording the names of the dead. On the left hand is a Colour-Sergeant leaning on his rifle reversed. Various weapons of war are scattered at their feet. The sculptor is Mr. Manning, of York-terrace, Regents Park. The work is executed in fine white Carrara marble, with a background of black marble. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
