Model of Queen Elizabeths yacht, 1864. Our Engraving represents a model of the Royal yacht built for Queen Elizabeth, now in the possession of Mr. Charles Brown, of her Majestys Dockyard, Deptford. It is about 5 ft. in length, and was modelled in 1588. It is cut out from the solid timber, the ornamental carvings, which are excellent both in their design and execution, being left in relief. Below the gunwale, on a blue streak or ribbon, are painted several groups of small figures, representing various subjects of classical mythology; and on the stern is an exquisite carving, which represents the introduction of Sir Walter Raleigh to Queen Elizabeth. The arrangement of the spars and of the standing and running rigging differs but slightly from that of the present day. The model is in an excellent state of preservation, and would be a valuable addition to the naval museum at Greenwich Hospital, or to that of the United Service Institution. It was purchased by Mr. Brown, at the sale of the effects of a deceased naval officer, not very long ago. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
