Meeting of the British Association at Birmingham:..."Pursuit of Science Under Difficulties", 1865. ...the party, after gaining a view of the Brown Clee hills on the left - the greatest elevations in the country, 1806 ft. and 1600 ft. above the sea-level - and Church Stretton on the right, then dived down again into the woods, where underwood and tangled branches made progress extremely difficult. Here a question arose whether it would be possible for the ladies to proceed further; but, on being consulted, they repudiated the idea of being left behind, and battled most successfully with the difficulties of the sylvan labyrinth. Passing out of the wood, there became visible on the opposite side of the slope the cottage at which it was understood luncheon had been prepared for the party, and all pressed onward.
