Cat flea head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis). One of its eyes (red) is seen at the centre of the flea's head. The two antennae-like structures at the front of the head are sensory palps, and below this are the mandibles, which are used to pierce the host's skin and suck blood. Fleas usually only remain on the host whilst feeding.
