Helicobacter pylori bacterium, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Formerly known as Campylobacter pyloridis, this Gram-negative spiral-shaped bacterium has flagella (hair-like strands), which are used for locomotion. It is found in the mucus lining of the stomach and is a common cause of gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) and stomach ulcers. Magnification: x14,000 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
