Dental plaque, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Plaque consists of bacteria (green and purple) embedded in a glycoprotein matrix (blue). The matrix is formed from bacterial secretions and saliva. If not removed regularly, plaque can lead to dental cavities (caries) or periodontal problems (such as gingivitis). Magnification: x6000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
