Triceratops dinosaur, illustration. Triceratops were common in the late Cretaceous period, from around 65 million years ago. Triceratops was a herbivorous dinosaur that could reach a length of up to nine metres and a weght of up to 12 tons. It is now believed that its distinctive horns were used for courtship display rather than for fighting. They lived in what is now North America.
