Citrobacter bacteria, illustration. One of the commonest species is Citrobacter freundii. These Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria are found in soil, water, food and as part of the normal flora of the human gut. They use citric acid as their carbon source. Although usually harmless, they can cause infant meningitis and urinary tract infections in immune compromised individuals.
