At top left and right of the uterus are the two fallopian tubes, which end at the ovaries. Every month one of the ovaries releases an egg (ovulation), which is received by the adjacent fallopian tube. The egg travels along the tube to the uterus, where, if fertilised, it will implant and grow. At the base of the uterus is the cervix, which opens into the vagina, the muscular birth canal.
