Northern lights (aurora borealis) visible in the sky behind a waterfall in southern Iceland. The northern lights are a coloured display of light occasionally visible in the night sky, usually only at high latitudes. They occur when charged and energetic particles from the Sun (solar wind) are drawn by Earths magnetic field to the polar regions. Hundreds of kilometres up, they collide with gas molecules and atoms, causing them to emit light.
