Examples of 19th century water meters. Thomas Duncan was Liverpool's first water engineer and devised a water meter in 1842. The design of the water meters made by the Manchester Meter Company illustrated here dates from about 1859. They were constructed on the piston and cylinder principle for general and trade purposes and were widely used by water companies.
