Contour lines are imaginary lines that link all points located at the same altitude. They allow the reader to easily recognize different types of relief features: widely spaced lines correspond to an almost flat surface, while lines placed close together illustrate a steep slope. It is thus possible to distinguish hills, cliffs, valleys, plateaus, plains, and so on.
