Plum Island, home of the Animal Disease Center, a research facility dedicated to studying infectious animal pathogens. It was opened in the 1950's, to research hoof-and-mouth disease in cattle. The US government plans to sell the island, off the far eastern tip of Long Island, NY, and move the research to Kansas.
