Sugar dehydration, 3 of 5. Table sugar (sucrose, C12H22O11) is placed in a beaker. Concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is then added and stirred. Within a minute, an exothermic reaction starts to take place, producing a rising column of black carbon with water steam (H2O) and some sulfur dioxide gas (SO2).
