Caravaggio (1571-1610) painting titled: Salome with the Head of John the Baptist. The canvas shows Salome, daughter of queen Herodias, holding in her hands the tray with the head of the prophet John the Baptist, who according to the Holy Gospels was beheaded by order of King Herod Antipas after having promised the latter to his stepdaughter Salome that, if she agreed to dance before him, she would give him whatever he wanted. And when the young woman asked him to give him the head of the Baptist, the king was upset because he appreciated it, but in the end he agreed to his wishes and ordered to execute him. circa 1607
