Black widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) pulls silk from her spinnerettes to perform maintenance on her web. Females of this species have leg spans of approximately 4 cm and are distinguished by the bright red hourglass pattern on the underside of the abdomen. While probably the most feared spider, black widows are not aggressive and their bites are rarely fatal to humans.
