Timelapse of the night sky over the APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment) radio telescope, Chajnantor Plateau, Atacama Desert, Chile. This is a 12 metre telescope that works at submillimetre wavelengths. It is used to study very distant cold clouds of gas and dust. These include areas of star and planet formation in some of the earliest galaxies.
