Peter Mere Latham (1789-1875), English physician. Latham was born in London, but was educated in Macclesfield before going up to Brasenose College, Oxford. On graduating he moved back to London to study medicine at St.Bartholemew's Hospital, although his first post was at the Middlesex Hospital. In 1818 he was elected fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1823 he helped identify an epidemic disorder in Millbank prison as a combination of dysentery and scurvy brought about by the poor diet of the prisoners. In 1824 he returned to St.Bartholemew's and taught many courses, his lectures on cardiac medicine allowing him to champion the newly invented stethoscope. In 1837 he was appointed physician extraordinary to Queen Victoria. He retired from practice in 1865, retiring to Devon.
