Sir Richard Grenville (1542-1591), English explorer and adventurer. Grenville was born at Clifton House in Devon, cousin to both Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. Afre studying law he turned to soldiering. He fought in Hungary against the Turks and joined Warham St.Leger in annexing large parts of Ireland. In the ensuing rebellion Grenville returned to England. He then raised a fleet of ships to transport settlers to Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. He then applied himself to raiding Spanish towns in the Azores Islands. Back in England he was part of the defence against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He returned to the Azores and was injured at the battle of Flores in 1591 and died a few days later. This engraving first was published in
