Ludwig Mond. Portrait of Ludwig Mond (1839-1909), German-British industrial chemist. Mond studied chemistry under Kolbe and Bunsen, but left for a career in industry. He discovered a process for recovering sulphur from waste from soda (sodium carbonate) manufacture. He set up his own soda works in 1872 and it became the largest in the world. Mond developed a new fuel, producer-gas, made by burning coal in a mixture of air & steam. In 1889, Mond developed a process to make nickel metal on an industrial scale. Warm nickel could be corroded by carbon monoxide to form nickel tetra- carbonyl; this could be heated to form pure nickel.
