The vertebral bones of the spine are compacted here, notably at centre, also with disc narrowing between the bones. Bony growths (osteophytes, yellow lumps) are also seen on the vertebrae. Osteoarthritis is a disease associated with the ageing process and mechanical stress. It causes joint stiffness and pain. Treatment of symptoms is with painkilling and anti-inflammatory drugs, and physiotherapy can help to maintain joint mobility.
