A great gray owl (Strix nebulosa) perches on an SUV. Standing 27 inches tall with a wingspan of 52 inches, the great gray is America's largest owl. When vole populations diminish in the boreal forests (the great gray's natural habitat), the predator owls move south in search of food. This owl was photographed in northern Minnesota.
