Pouring Bromine. Bromine liquid is weakly bonded and readily vaporizes at room temperature. The gas (orange) consists of molecules that move independently of each other and so have spread out to fill the jar in a process termed diffusion. The element bromine is part of the halogen group, and is the only non-metallic element that is a liquid at room temperature. It is extremely toxic and takes its name from a Greek word meaning stench. Bromine compounds are used in water purification and textile flameproofing.
